Company History - A Humble and Unique Beginning

With no place to go but up, AAA Printing began in the basement. The year was 1978 and 18 year old John Madden dreamed of owning his own printing business. With his parents’ help and financial backing, the shop was set up in the basement of his parents’ house and the company was named AAA Business Cards.

Some new businesses start like the old adage says, “on a wing and a prayer.” But AAA started with a wing. John wanted a thermography unit to create raised type on business cards but the units were very expensive. So John’s father, John Madden Sr., engineered a smaller version of a thermography unit. They purchased scrap metal from Boeing Surplus and assembled the unit themselves. The main frame on their thermography unit was made from part of an old Boeing 747 airplane wing! Oddly enough, it worked extraordinarily well.

For the first two years the company produced only business cards. The press they were run on was a rare three-color letterpress —only seven of these presses were ever made. Typesetting was done on an archaic machine called a Linotype, a typesetting process created in 1886 in which each line of type is individually cast into metal slugs. Although Linotype was a noisy, cumbersome machine that required frequent maintenance, John recalls it fondly,” It had lots of moving parts and was absolutely amazing to watch in action.”

John’s parents helped a great deal in keeping things running smoothly. John’s mother, Dianne, handled customer service and bookkeeping duties. She continued to work with AAA for 17 years until she retired from her position as Bookkeeper in 1995. John’s father, John Sr., had his career at Boeing Computer Services, yet still found time to help with maintenance and mentor John Jr. with his introduction to business.

Within three years, AAA Business Cards had outgrown the basement. Sales had doubled each year and John was able to print letterheads, envelopes and flyers in addition to business cards. In 1981 John moved the company to its present location in Bellevue. He hired AAA’s first full time press operator, Trevor Schaaf, who remained a valued employee for over 10 years. John also renamed the company to reflect the greater range of services offered. It was 1981 and AAA Printing had arrived.
